Happy 2010!! Here's a quick look at how I'm setting my intention, rituals, creative production goals and letting the outcomes take care of themselves!

    I love this...Intention for 2010 is to focus on taking care of myself with the spiritual tools on the daily with meditation and yoga. My intention for 2010 is to help move my family closer to buying a farm in North Carolina through my internet businesses and my legal & id theft business. My intention for 2010 is to have a closer, more cohesive relationship with my dad and my husband.

        Brian my rituals are 30 minutes in the morning and afternoon of Primordial Sound Meditation, then 2-5 minutes of gratitudes. I also devote 30 minutes a day or more to read a good book. I practice Yoga 2-5 times a week.

        When I rise and hit the sack I also read the summary of the 7 Spiritual Laws of Success along with my goals/intentions/affirmations for this year.

          Those are awesome rituals, Sharla! You guys are helping me to get going so much! This 2010 I had the best beginning to any new year EVER! I've been given absolutely everything I need to move forward with my goals without worry. It's a new experience for me and adjusting is challenging. Worry had become a habit. Years ago I was able to easily follow these kinds of rituals/disciplines with phenomenal results. I kinda let challenging life events take me off course for a long time. Brian, what you're doing here is helping a lot of people to (re)align with Source. And us coming together like this is what, I feel, will bring about the "critical mass". Thanks so much everyone. And I'm thanking myself too for the wonderful contribution I am to the world (one of my goals for 2010 self-love/appreciation, something up til now I wasn't so familiar with).     Great video. Wanted to share that I too love large sheets and use a 11X14 hard bound artist sketch pad to do my mind mapping sketches- my favorites are from Canson (nice thick paper that is good for marker use).

    Ironically, I am watching this on a break from my New Year's ritual: I close out the previous year and then "create" what I want to bring into the new. I include everything from goals to people to adventures. http://www.memapping.com

    Love this Brian! It makes so much sense to me. Quick question: how do we reconcile both process and outcomes? I've been reviewing Napoleon Hill and he says to focus on the outcome you desire - any advice on that?

      i think it's *very* important to have a clear sense of what we'd like to see in our lives (with the caveat that we don't want to stress ourselves out by, as aurelius would say "confusing ourselves with visions of a lifetime all at once"). the most important thing we can once we get a basic sense of what's important to us is to MOVE in that direction.

      we don't want to say "f-it" and never set another goal b/c they haven't panned out and our attachment to them leads to suffering and we don't want to become so maniacally attached to them that we get overwhelmed and then give up. (I've personally mastered both approaches at various stages of my development. ;)

      that's why I'm so keen on creating a general, simple (!!!) intention, a basic set of goals/outcomes we'd be giddy to see and then spending the rest of our time getting clear on what rituals we're going to rock as we DILIGENTLY, PATIENTLY, PERSISTENTLY AND PLAYFULLY *DO* the stuff we need to do to be the type of person we need to be to achieve the things we want to achieve.

      The other thing I mentioned in the video is to get clear on what we're going to PRODUCE (vs what results we'll get *from* our creative production). our creative production is within our control to a far greater degree than the outcomes of that production, which is why I'm all about getting clear on it then rockin our rituals as we produce.

      that make sense?

        I really love your philosophy, Brian

        To summarize:.. I hope this helps someone out there:

        Dos
        1) Have a clear and basic sense of what you'd like to see. Set a simple intention, basic set of goals/outcomes. (e.g: I want to create a compassionate world where everyone belongs.)

        2) Create rituals and work diligently, patiently, persistently and playfully to accomplish those goals. You can control your rituals more than the outcomes it produces. (I'll give 1hr per day to talk to someone who feels lonely and unwanted.)

        Donts
        1) Don't freak out and be maniacally attached to goals because you'll feel overwhelmed and give up.
        2) Don't avoid setting goals just because attachment to them leads to suffering.

    Great Video Brian - Love your approach. All too often people just create demands on themselves by focusing on the outcomes they want from live - often this leads to disappointment and further evidence of failure for many.

    I have so many things that occupy my mind and things I want to achieve that at times I get bogged down, and sometimes lose direction.
    I have found that I tend to priorities things, by that I mean when I don’t know what to do next I ask myself “what is the priority” and whatever the answer is then that’s what gets done.
    This works well at work, but not so at home and leisure as I have so many things that interest me.
    Learning a new language (Spanish) Weight training kettle bell training, fitness nutrition, NLP Hypnosis. To name a few.

    Having seen the mind map this may be the tool I need to help me sort out the masses of information I have floating around in my brain (oh my brain hurts)

    Hey, I'm a newbie on your site and really dig your "voice" (and your voice)! Haha! You speak in ways that break it all down so easily and that in itself makes it easy to remember. I'm all about enjoying the process and letting go of the outcomes. It has repeatedly worked out much better that way.

    I checked out your tweet about "Clean" and read the website but am still not sure what it is...liquid, supplements, a whole new grocery shopping list, or what? I've done other cleanses in the past that were very difficult to do and stick with as life has to go on with some sort of normalcy. Can you tell me why this one is so good and why everyone says it fits into a busy lifestyle? Many, many thanks!

      dr. junger rocks. i'm really impressed with how he sees things and i'm personally finding it super easy to do. smoothie, normal lunch (less stuff on the "eliminate" list) and another smoothie. zero pain in the ass quotient and i've done a lot of different things so I know how big of a pain it can be!! :)

I appreciate the "zone" perspective. It really helps me "feel" where I'm at.     Hi Brian - this was the perfect post to see right now. I used your video as a model (paused it about 8 times to get clear on each step in my own life and business) and I came up with some really nice stuff - Thanks! I used OneNote to map it out.

    btw - I've been doing TM since '74 - so it is most definitely a part of my rituals, too. I also put on my list for this year - sun salutations 3Xs a day (as I sit at the computer up to 10 hours a day) and remembering to use my gratitude journal each night before bed.

    I've sent this video out to a ton of people because I believe it to be so spot on Brian. I remember reading back in 1995 Real Magic by Wayne Dyer and he mentions there are 3 ways to live our lives:

    1. Through Suffering
    2. Through Outcome
    3. On Purpose

    Outcome is certainly better than through suffering however you hit something dead on in the video. The self development industry loves to sell the outcome and I see it driving people crazy because they seem to always be chasing the carrot and looking for the magic bullet. Living life is a state of being not having. We're human beings not human doings.

    Loving your work my friend and this video is a great visual to help anyone "put together" a plan of going into the new year.

    Sometimes I picture you waking up in the morning 'before the sun catches you' and imagine if you ever think to yourself ... 'oh, gawd. screw this. i'm tired. the bed is warm. i don't want to get up. forget it.' ... and then roll over and keep sleeping? Do you ever struggle with resistance? Is there an undisciplined bone in your body? LOL.

    I swear I need to write a book called The Lazy Seeker's Guide To Enlightenment because as much as I totally agree with diligent, persistent, patient and playful, those ideas mostly just make me want to take a loooong nap.

      of course there are plenty of mornings when I want to stay in bed and enjoy the nice warm hot chick next to me. and i often do enjoy a little cuddle (or a long one).

      the thing is, i just got tired of being depressed. and i recognized that there was a remarkably high correlation between my staying in bed and having a really shitty day. might be the fact that my dad was an alcoholic and his dad was an alcoholic who killed himself and most of the people in my family are either anxious or depressed or both, but i realized i'm a bit sensitive and there are certain things that, when i do them, make me feel really good. and, seeing that i like feeling good a lot more than i like feeling like shit, it's become a pretty easy decision to rock the things I know work for me. :)

      and, now that I'm thru the hard part of building a lot of these habits over the last decade, i can see just how powerful they are which makes me giddy to have fun rocking them even more.

      i like how beckwith puts it in his great book "spiritual liberation":

      “The transition from the egoic self to the Authentic Self requires discipline... The good news is that discipline eventually becomes what I call a “blissipline” because it leads to playing our part with integrity, dignity, elegance, passion, and deep contentment.” ...

      “We’ve all experienced how discipline sometimes causes an automatic rebellion or resistance within us. We don’t like the energy around the word discipline, perhaps because of the place it has occupied in our upbringing, education or religion. However, a healthy view of discipline keeps us on track in areas of our life where we’ve determined to make a change. Discipline is a practice of self-love, self-respect, and surrender that results in freedom.”

    Awesome quick review on a different approach to goal setting Brian. I have been following you for about six months and I love your dedication and enthusiasm. I have noticed a HUGE energy jump in your facebook musings over the past couple of months - I don't know what it is or why, but I feel this huge rush of energy every time I read your posts. You are definitely transforming and reaching a new level of awareness.

    This is the first PN TV episode I have watched - I LOVE the focus on intention - I truly believe our intention is what DRIVES everything we do. I am starting to draw out (literally) the focus for the next decade of my life (big picture) and then specifically create this year's intentions with a mate tonight and tomorrow.

    This is pure genius! I noticed that last year almost all of the goals that I set were outcome goals and it is the new rituals and practices that I adopted that had by far the most positive impact on my life while the outcome goals sometimes caused a lot of stress.

    I am excited about using this approach in my goal setting going forward. I have a strong intuitive feeling that you are on to something really powerful here. So excited to see you share your thoughts in the book and DVDs later this year!

    Thank you Brian for sharing these valuable ideas. I've spent much of 2009 preparing myself for stepping up my game in 2010, having "lived" with your PN's has given me a great amount of ideas and convinced me of the power of rituals and consitency. My strategy has changed radically from being strictly outcome focused and cronically crashing in my panic zone, to becoming process oriented like you articulate in your vid. "Process oriented" used to sound weak and wishy-washy to me, but your video puts it in perspective beautifully.
    I've started the year strong with simple daily rituals and I'm feeling relaxed and confident in reaching my outcomes.

    Your video is inspirational. I got out my notebook and began setting my goals for 2010. One of my intentions is to gain additional wisdom, strength & courage to respect myself and to also have more family gatherings especially with my son. I want to be happy and get up before the sun and I feel very depressed because I don't have my son and I worked hard in the past and didn't get back what I put in to it.     This is EXACTLY the way I laid out my 2010 at the end of December, we continue to be Spiritual Kindred Clones, I mean Brothers! Love the way you make the left brain process stuff fun, intention based, and playful, yet still be able to rock the house with the desired output.

    And you're right, so many people get attached to the work 24/7 to get some outcome, and miss the whole party not to mention most of the time getting disappointed.

    Rock on my friend, and looking forward to our continued exploration.

    Ahh! So "The road to hell isn't paved with good intentions"? That's good to know. I was a wee bit worried that my intention to save the world this decade was going to put me in line for the hellfire and damnation scenario for the 2nd half of my life. I was having a magic life thus far so if I can avoid that retrograde consequence, perhaps I can bring forward my actions based on my intentions without fear. Cool!

    This is great stuff!! The focus on the outcomes is exactly the problem!

    I haven't found an ideal way to identify the right processes/rituals which lead to the right outcomes. I have the feeling they are connected to the intentions, do you have tipps on how to connect <intentions> - <outcomes> - and <processes/rituals>? Do you think about the outcomes at all before setting the processes/rituals?

      for me, it's all a dynamic flow--each part constantly shifting and evolving and dancing together.

      one thing I personally love to come back to that you might find helpful in creating rituals:

      What's the #1 thing you could start doing today, and make it a habit/ritual, that would have THE greatest positive benefit in your life?!?

      And, what's the #1 thing you need to STOP doing, that, if you stopped doing it today, would have the greatest positive impact?!? (that's a sweet way to create "negative rituals"! :)

      whenever I'm stressed/overwhelmed, I come back to those questions and they REALLY help me simplify my life and focus on what's important.

    Dear Brian, Thank you! Watched this twice to absorb the energy...the information. Your style is so inspirational! Love your passion. It really shows. Had 2 things that came up in my mind Brian...how would you differentiate between an intent and an outcome. Can an outcome be an intent and vice versa and drive us through the rituals? Just trying to understand the elements & their role.

    And my 2nd question....about journaling. Do you use it to write whatever arises naturally each day or do you plan it a specific way...? Or any other method? Would love to know.

    so, first: how do you define intent?

    i really vary. for several months straight i did a very systematic journaling every day--capturing my values/habits/visions/etc. now I do a lot of creative and strategic thinking when I feel inspired but nothing quite so regimented. I really think it's important we trust ourselves and realize that there's never going to be a "fixed" or permanent way to do anything (in my mind anyway!). how do you like to journal? and what do you think would be a great practice for you!??

    Thanks Brian! I'd define intent as something I'd like to manifest? And what's manifested, is the outcome right?

    That really helped - about the journaling. Loved the part about trusting ourselves and not having anything 'fixed'. I had read about the Morning Pages by Ms. Cameron(?) and I had liked doing that, it really did clear my mind and made the space. Not been consistent doing it though and it made me wonder...if I was just not the disciplined kind or can inconsistency be because of a natural rhythm? (different topic :)

    And then I find myself having a different journal solely for the kind of thoughts I can refer back to & learn from...I write quotes I come across that really speak to me. Or sometimes entire paragraphs from books am reading that move me and that I can't afford to forget (esp if I don't own the book and have to let go of it soon :-) and want to return to. The process of writing is involving and so enjoyable and drives the point home better.

    so intent: an outcome is a result. it's something that we ultimately do not have control over whereas, as per your definition, an intent is a guiding feeling/vision of what's possible and who you will be in the process of whatever outcomes you are experiencing in the moment. that make any more sense? :)

    Totally inspiring stuff Brian. It's Hani here, from your PNLive sessions in Ubud a year ago. Since we last saw each other, I've moved to Singapore to really kickstart my journey, incorporated all the daily rituals you talked about in your video (inspired by you) and have set some ambitious goals that will really put me in my stretch zone for 2010.     I believe that when you put your best into whatever it is you are doing the outcome will be great.

    Giving our best without a $ sign attached, will, allow us to create from a place that is not focused on what we can get, but what we can GIVE.

    the basic idea is (and i need to do a whiteboard/journal video on this i think), we want everything we do to be in integrity, aligned with our sense of purpose. so, for me, I've figured out i love to study life and share what I learn. and now i've figured out the context/framework and now it's a lot easier (still challenging at times, but much easier) to figure out what I want to produce next.

    In NLP, we'd remind people to focus on an outcome/intention/goal that describes the FEELINGS, i.e. physical sensations, we want to have, rather than the specific path (process) to get to those feelings, or specific material things we might find while taking that path. These feelings/sensations outcomes are the most important things to keep in mind, since they allow us to more easily be open to all the good, true, beautiful, and inspiring opportunities that happen to present themselves in life which we may not be expecting. Because, if we are focusing too much on specific paths or material things, such as "writing a book", we might miss out on some other opportunities we have that would lead us to even more of these feelings we want to have, because "writing" is just one paths we might take and "a book" is just one of the material things we might find on our way to our intended sensational goal. The purpose of doing things this way, - of setting the goal/outcome/intention to be feelings - is to let each part of our self do what it does best. The conscious mind is great at looking at the past and future and deciding what might be best for the future, in this case sorting though all the different sensations that it's had in the past and would love to have again, and the unconscious body~mind is best at navigating and noticing details about possible hidden gems in our environment.

    For me, my goal/intention/outcome is something like:

    The feelings of having enough whole food, pure water, fresh air, warmth, light, and the freedom to express myself physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.

    The short version of this goal is to continue to love the world and myself even more every day.

    For you, Brain, what feelings do you get when you give your greatest gifts, and greatest services to the world, inspiring as many people as you can, as you have fun studying, embodying, and sharing your favorite wisdom? What does it feel like when you do this? What sensations do you experience as these things happen?

      I have yet to find a good book. The early Bandler and Grinder "Frogs Into Princes" book is the best. But it's still out of print, I believe. NLP really doesn't lend itself to text, unfortunately, and all the other books I've looked at are majorly problematic. Though you might try "Conversations with Richard Bandler" by Owen Fitzpatrick. It's new, and I haven't read the whole thing (can't afford it, and the library doesn't have it), but I've read excerpts and they were impressive. Bandler's new book "Get the Life You Want" is ok, and is a reasonably good introduction to NLP, but it's kind of bland, if you ask me.

      But if you don't mind offering a note for an out of print book, I'd absolutely go with Frogs into Princes.

    I would greatly enjoy if our paths crossed some day.

    I remember encoutering you and your work a few years back when I had this "flash of brilliance" on a plane flight where they had all of these business books summarized into 20 min. audio or cliff notes and I thought, "I want to do that for spiritual/personal growth/cool books!

    And then someone told me about your work and I was crestfallen and delighted.

    My overall goals and intentions for most areas of my life are very similar from year to year. Only the products seem to change. I'm not sure if this reflects constancy or lack of imagination.

    I too find mind maps very satisfying for clarifying and organizing my thinking/feelings. I suggest that you include Tony Buzan's books on the subject in your collection.
