I have been surfing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It’s pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before.

“Learned Optimism” by Martin Seligman

Brian thanks for reposting this TV Note. I missed it before.

Learned optimism is what I was made aware of from an early age. I recall hearing, “Always look at the bright side.” I still believe the blessings I have are due to being optimistic.

The downside is that “happy, happy, happy,” can go overboard by glossing over factors which can prevent a viable solution. Usually though, I’ve found better solutions because of optimistic thinking.

<a href="http://www.adidasforum.com/adidas-originals-2010/" rel="nofollow">Adidas Forum</a>
Now here's a shoe-in for the list of the year's best gaming-related clothing : Adidas has brought back its ZX 500 running shoe, and, since it originally comes from the '80s, the gaming galvanized design and coloring is an easy choice ... Right? The kicks would possibly not be the coolest part of the deal, either ; they come packed with a combination bracelet/USB flashdrive containing ZX Runner, a PC game based primarily on ... The shoe itself.

GameCulture writes the game stars a personality named'DJ Zed' who, according to Adidas, has 5 minutes to'run, moon-walk, climb walls, avoid some dodgy-looking thugs, collect power-ups, and pull off loony rooftop-to-rooftop stunts' in order to get on-stage before his set starts. It looks suitably retro -- see for yourself in the video we've included after the breakdance.

Optimism has its place, and has genuine value as a primary mind-set. Yet optimism, as a core value can result in overconfidence, and failure to consider other creative possibilities in problem solving, or life situations. For example, if I am optimistic; confident that a certain strategy, or solution to a particular challenge is viable, I might neglect to make the effort to explore, not only other viable solutions, but more importantly, the correct solution to a particular challenge.

Optimism, or "the tendency to expect the best possible outcome or to dwell upon the most hopeful aspect of a situation," is not necessarily the best attitude to approach every possible situation or challenge. The creative process, and personal challenges are often fraught with, of necessity, uncertainty, frustration, and indecision. Interjecting optimism, as it were, into these process can lead to incomplete, or, at best, results requiring much reworking.

Rollo May points out in his book, "The Courage To Create," the relationship between commitment and doubts in the creative process, and suggest this relationship "presupposes a greater respect for truth." Surely doubt is, in this context, not only the antithesis of optimism, but an essential antithesis in the creative process. Thus optimism, as I perceive it, cannot achieve desired results unless it is tempered with a fuller range of balanced emotional responses.

Thanks for this resource, Brian.
This is soooo pervasive and personal to me because I have been working to make the shift from pessimist to optimist permanent, for years. I just put the book on my list.
You mentioned Skinner's conditioning concepts as if they have been countered by Seligman and positive psychology. Could positive psychology be seen as self-conditioning, that we decide on, as opposed to something that is don to us, or happens to us?

i love it! i just ordered the da vinci book after watching your video on mind mapping. can't wait to read it and try these techniques.

i know what you mean about having tears in your eyes remembering that story...i get so excited to hear stories like this as a reminder of what's possible when people (especially kids) believe in themselves :)

looking forward to watching PN on "flow" tomorrow!

that's powerful, chris. it's *exactly* the same thing.

here's to inspiring and empowering kids (and adults!) to believe they can rock it as we demonstrate what's possible!

btw: I just put up a blog post on how I mind map. I don't know if you do, but when i learned this like 7 or 8 years ago i tutored a girl who was struggling in school and i inspired her to believe in herself again and taught her how to look for the "big ideas" in a chapter (on, say, the american revolution) and then mind map them like in the video. her c's went to a's in weeks and i went to her school for special friends and grandparents day and her teacher pulled me aside and said: "what did you DO to her?!?" i have tears in my eyes as I type that. so important to empower the next gen!!!!

I think I cried a little when you told the story of the dogs. I tutor kids who are having trouble in math, and I can't help but see the parallels between kids who learn they can't succeed in school and the dog that learns he can't avoid the shock.

The good news is, like you say, optimism can be learned, just like helplessness. I think the world is ready for a Philosophers Notes course in every school :)

Keep up the great work!

Another great TV note. I actually listened to the note on "Learned Optimism" in my car today and had a few A-ha moments. You helped me release an encounter with my nit-picky boss. Its not permanent, its not personal.

Thanks B!

I am loving this new habit of checking out your PN TV and notes. As for this one I just burst out laughing when you described the 3 P's of opti/pessimistics - for the obvious reasons of being a pessi on rare occasions:)

Thanks for the laugh and the TV notes

This book really resonates with me because I remember that as a teenager I was always struggling with "optimism" but over time it has just become habitual. Now, no matter what happens, it seems that I am almost incapable not to immediately look for the best in the situation and I have an attitude that I will always bounce back. I think I was able to develop it through consistent practice and completely agree that this can be learned.
