Hey Brian. This book was the first self development book I ever read and it is sooooo good !
Thanks for your personal insights on this book ...
My fave habit from the book is 'start with the end in mind ...' I think if we reflect on this habit often and then move to 'being proactive' ... what a great way to live ...!
me, too, alan!!
love it. here's to starting with the end in mind and being proactive!
I know when I am on target when:
Driving Home for the Holidays, through the Rockies yesterday, I had a sudden realization that the hood ornament on my car is pointing to my True North.
My mind drifted to the inspirations I have received, and the gratitude I feel, for having had the privildge of working with Sean Covey on his 7 Habits book, and more recently on Sean's 'The 6 Most Important Decisions You will Ever Make' (both teen books), as well as on the production of Premiere Agenda's inspirational in-school agenda's for many years (26 million in distribution to students across N. America ) and how it has helped shape my life.
I pulled my car over, and took a photo of my "True North" pointer, with the highway, mountains, and a turn in the road ahead. Then, pulling out my journal, I made a note to pull out some of my 7 Habit material for review during my sabatical.
Today... your message is on Stephen's (Sean's dad's) 7 habits. In response to my written request. Thank you, and Happy Holidays!
Thank you!
what a great story, sharon!! thx for sharing!
i'd love to see that picture!
Oo Ooo one of the reasons I took a job with Premier Agendas (the main reason other than getting paid) was the opportunity to support the 7 Habits through the student planners! :O) Interesting meeting up with you here Sharon!
I am reviewing 7 Habits Materials today and ran across Bryan's PN after watching his Ken Wilbur PN.
Thanks for doing this. This one of my favorite books. Many blessings, Zoilita

thx, zolita!!!
The number 7 comes up quite a lot. There is a psychology paper by George Miller of Harvard that says that human short-term memory can hold about 7 things simultaneously (with variation of plus or minus 2). There is a book by Jacqueline Leo called "Seven: The Number for Happiness, Love, and Success" that talks about the number 7. Seven days of the week. Seven wonders of the world, etc.
I know Covey and Deepak Chopra are learned in psychology. Perhaps that is why they write books with titles like "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and "The 7 Spiritual Laws of Success" respectively. Because we can only remember 7 of them at a time.
hmmm... cool!
well, I'd love to hear more about habit #6, that piqued my interest. This note is a confirmation that I am in the right place as I'm writing a biz plan over the break. New distinction is that everything is created twice, in the past i can see that between 'creation in thought' and 'creation in action' I have inserted 'destruction in thought' therefore negating the need for creation in action. So the new mantra that everything is created twice will be a great reminder and tool for effectiveness.
There is something I see in you and your work in this video, a new level of comfort and confidence, this is a man within whom i can put my trust, my trust of his knowledge. If feels like all the work you have been doing and all the structure in place is paying off. OH! That's the synergy - hmmm I think I just taught myself habit # 6.
Much love and happy holidays,
Andrea
hey andrea!
here's some more love on synergy from the Note:
...
“Synergy is everywhere in nature. If you plant two plants close together, the roots commingle and improve the quality of the soil so that both plants will grow better than if they were separated. If you put two pieces of wood together, they will hold much more than the total weight held by each separately. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. One plus one equals three or more.”
Synergy. 1 + 1 = 3+.
What a beautiful concept. The word finds its roots in the Greek sunergos “working together.”
And, as Covey points out, when we work together, one plus one equals more than two. That’s amazing. I know I feel it in my intimate relationship. And have such a deep sense of gratitude for the power of our “working together.”
What synergistic relationship can you be more grateful for today?
...
and thx for your kind words! not missing a day of meditation for a year and a half plus 2 years of full-time immersion in this schtuff is starting to sink in!
fun!
love and hugs and here's to an amazing 2010!!

So as I was watching the 7 Habits PN today, I experienced synergy. I had a new idea for mastering the "End In Mind" habit come to me and it wouldn't have happened in this way without Covey and Brian J.
Stay tuned !
awesome!!!
*tuned*
This is my favorite Covey work. We use the Eulogy exercise in our Life Coaching with clients in our Pregnancy Center. Very powerful tool!
awesome, cindy!
I LOVE that exercise!!!
here's to an amazing 2010!
Hi Brian, Thanks for the good work! It's helping many of us. By the way, what is "Eulogy exercise"? Will you please put some light on it sometime?
Happy holidays & have a wonderful year ahead!
here's the Idea from the Note, Sarah:
Imagine going to the funeral of a loved one. You’re getting out of your car, walking into the chapel or funeral parlor. You see the flowers and the other people entering. You feel the sadness of loss and the joy of having known. Feel into that.
You walk to the front and look into the casket and suddenly come face to face with yourself.
You realize this is your funeral. Feel that. You sit down and look at the program in your hand—reading the description of your life and seeing the people who will be talking about you. What do they say? How does the program capture your life? What do your closest loved ones say about you? Your spouse or children? Your friends and colleagues?
…Now, fast-forward xx years from today. Imagine that scene of your own funeral. You have that program in your hand. What does it say? You watch your loved ones get up and speak about you and their love for you. What do they say? Who were you in their eyes?
Take some time today/this week (right now?!?) to sit down and really reflect on this. It’s a *really* powerful way to gain clarity on your highest values.
I've read this book a number of times. Each time I gather up something new, to hear someone discuss the seven habits in full gives you different point of view. Nice.
cool, chiquita!!
The habit of slowing down and not reacting is the one I am really working on. This one, not being work on, has effected my life poorly...so thanks for the reminder!
Happy new year!
that's powerful stuff, romola! thx for sharing and happy happy new year!!
You are Awesome! I love the way you explain things, the analogy, which makes the wisdom come in with clarity. I remember 40 years ago praying for "Wisdom" Sometimes quickly sometimes slowly.
Only after I have awakened am I gaining Wisdom. Now my "Higher Power" is putting just the right people in my life. Thank You for being a conduit.
Many Blessings.
thx, micki!!!
here's to an incredible 2010 filled with Higher Power goodness!
Hey Brian,
I remember years ago when I read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People book and thought it was so boring since it was so basic and obvious (although great principles to actually utilize). But, there was one principle in that book that had a profound impact on my perspective which I internalized and have realized a lot of value from over the years…
That is the principle of Production vs. Production Capability.
This principle is so so so so so so so so so so useful and can consistently cause most people to completely shift their logical conclusions on what is the best strategy or decision to pursue in important scenarios of their everyday life and goals.
Production being desired end results. Production Capability being one’s capability to produce desired results. The general perspective being that both can have major value and that they both should consistently be paid attention to and strategized against.
For example, will you make more sales next month by forcing yourself to pitch double the prospects or by invoking more passionate connection into your personal relationships so that your energy & confidence level up?
While most of the world is likely directly chasing “production” or desired end results most of the time. Optimal results will come from day trading between custom blends of production and production capability depending upon the unique people and scenarios in play.
Thought I’d share since it was a game changing tool for me long ago and is still paying large dividends today.
forgot about that story till now and love it, brian!!!
Wow lots of posts again today, and awesome insights (referring to the 50 day challenge). I learn so much from reading others' perspectives on the very same material I reviewed. Listened to the mp3 & reviewed the pdf today (I like to follow along w/ Brian and then read it again on my own to help it 'stick'). I LOVE the principle-centered or value-based approach towards success. Overcoming the "integrity gap" is something I've encountered many times in Brian's notes and I think its starting to change me as a person. Too many times have I given an insincere "yes" when a polite "no" would have been more honest and saved both parties time. In this note it becomes clear that when you are so committed to your own values that you begin to act more genuinely with the world around you. So this becomes my practice... and by practice I mean... PRACTICE! Quadrant 2 stuff is really all I have to work on, which as a side benefit sharpens the saw.
Exercise -- I just lost 40lbs. and looking to lose another 20 or so while building muscle!
Meditation -- according to Ken Wilber the only way to jump 2 or more stage conceptions in THIS lifetime.
Reading -- I get lost too often in my own narratives, which tend to be boring...time to tap into some more knowledge and perspectives of other great individuals!
Journaling -- Priceless, & THANKS Brian for doing impromptu videos on your journaling processes, such as mind mapping.
Gratitude(log.com) -- THE happiness practice. In the few short weeks I have used the service the things I am grateful for are shining even brighter, and I find my mind orienting to that which is good in my life rather than that which isn't so good.
Loving this theme of intention, daily rituals, and productive goals...and letting go of the outcomes. I've never been good at predicting the future anyway :]
as always, amazing, john!
i love reading your posts!!! inspiring.
time for a q2 bath and reading for me.
I love the idea of inserting pro-activity between the symptom and the reaction - that's where the choice lies and that is where change can occur. I have a friend that is really good at telling me, when I'm frustrated with the same result of having reacted the same way, 'Well, you don't ever have to do THAT again!" And, it was that little shift of realizing that I HAD done it the same way AGAIN that the principle started to work in my life.
Your explanation on this habit was terrific! Thanks, Brian!
love that story and thx for the kind words, linda!!
Brian,
In my experience, yoga and meditation and journaling as well as getting constructive feedback from others has helped me to get in to the gap more and become more able to get in to the "gap" and be proactive as described in Habit 1.
I am curious what your thoughts are on this and if you have any additional tips for people to learn how to be "pro active" in the manner Covey describes. If I remember correctly, he doesn't really share too many strategies if any at all other than Habit 2.
hey joshua! those are all GREAT ways to stay proactive! hmmm... there are so many sprinkled throughout all the Notes/PN TVs... basically, anything we can do to step out of victim-mode and into proactive creating mode is huge. we want to see when we slip into things like criticism and blame and take our power back by seeing what we can do to positively influence the situation. also, by embodying all his other habits and all the other things in which we believe, we're demonstrating the essence of this idea in powerful ways!!!
fun!
